The living room fireplace in the new house had a white tiled hearth and a shiny gold frame.  The room with a spectacular view of the mountains screamed for a fireplace with more drama.  The decision was made.  Use granite for the hearth and the fireplace surround.  While at the store buying a black granite slab for the hearth, I asked what was done with the scraps.  Their discards, piled high in a dumpster, were offered as a gift for re-purposing.

I climbed the rungs of the bin and dug deep to pull out jet-blacks with specks of gold, silvery blues, and bits of green.  All were precious granite, scraps tossed away as trash. How many kitchen countertops are in here?   Putting the puzzle pieces together was a lesson in patience.  But the final picture was worth the time and the chiropractor bills.  A fireplace surround was born which defies its humble beginnings in a dumpster.
